The Proof
Why Do Sun City Center
Homeowners LOVE Us?
We are so happy to have our water softener and glad we made the decision to go with Culligan. Fast, friendly and professional. Price wasn’t too bad either. Thank you Culligan Man 🙂
Our sales representative was very knowledgeable and although we already knew we needed a water softener due to the hard water in our area, he educated us even farther. They came out very quickly and installed the water softener and reverse osmosis filter. We can already tell a big difference in our skin and no more water stains on the shower glass!
I love my system and the delivery service is outstanding. Not having to deal with loading the salt is a plus. If I need service I get it. It is great and love the soft water for showers and doing laundry. Thanks culligan!!!
The Best Water Softeners and Water Filters in Sun City Center, Florida.
Sun City Center water quality often faces our share of water filtration and treatment issues:
Surface water, like rivers and snow melt, absorb contaminants that can be harmful for consumption as well as annoying around the home. Most of these contaminants include naturally occurring bio materials and minerals. This means water quality can worsen seasonally when warming temperatures contribute to algal blooms, or heighten water sensitivity to microorganism growth.
Ground water presents its own treatment challenges and filtration issues, so Sun City Center residents with primarily groundwater service may see different water problems than those using water from Ruskin surface water sources. Most often, these manifest as hard water problems which cause buildup on faucets and fixtures and can be hard on appliances and plumbing.
What is Sun City Center, Florida’s Water Quality?
Sun City Center’s water is supplied by Hillsborough County’s South-Central Water System, which sources water from the Floridan Aquifer, the Alafia and Hillsborough Rivers, and desalinated seawater via Tampa Bay Water. The water undergoes a comprehensive treatment process that includes reverse osmosis, chloramination, ozonation, filtration, and fluoridation (until July 2025).
According to the 2024 Hillsborough County Water Quality Report, the following regulated contaminants were detected in the water supply, though all were within legal safety limits:
Trace amounts of unregulated PFAS compounds were also detected during testing. While legally compliant, these findings may still be relevant for residents with long-term health concerns. Because local plumbing can affect in-home quality, water testing is the best way to know what’s coming from your tap.
Is Sun City Center Tap Water Safe to Drink?
Yes. The tap water in Sun City Center meets all U.S. EPA and Florida Department of Environmental Protection drinking water standards. Hillsborough County performs tens of thousands of lab tests each year to ensure safe, clean water reaches residents.
Still, water may contain trace contaminants like chlorine byproducts, metals from home plumbing, or emerging contaminants like PFAS. Home filtration provides added protection and peace of mind.
Is Sun City Center Tap Water Hard?
Yes. Like much of the region, Sun City Center’s water is considered hard due to elevated levels of calcium and magnesium in the groundwater from the Floridan Aquifer.
- Common signs of hard water include:
- Mineral buildup on faucets or showerheads
- Soap scum and spotting on glassware
- Dry skin and hair after bathing
- Clothing that feels stiff after washing
The level of hardness is not detailed in the water quality report. However, a free water test by Culligan can tell you how hard your water is and provide insight to possible solutions. A water softener can help reduce buildup, protect plumbing, and improve water feel and efficiency.
Is There PFAS in Sun City Center Water?
Yes. The 2024 report detected trace levels of several unregulated PFAS compounds, including:
- PFBA: up to 5.7 ppt
- PFBS: up to 4.5 ppt
- PFHxA: up to 6.0 ppt
- PFOS: up to 4.4 ppt
- PFPeA: up to 8.1 ppt
These levels are within proposed federal limits, but PFAS compounds, also known as “forever chemicals,” may accumulate in the body over time. Culligan offers point-of-use and whole-home filtration systems designed to reduce PFAS effectively.
Does Sun City Center Tap Water Have Fluoride?
Yes. In 2024, fluoride was added to Sun City Center’s water supply at an average level of 0.73 ppm, which falls within the recommended range to help prevent tooth decay.
Note: Hillsborough County will discontinue fluoride addition on July 1, 2025, in response to new state legislation. If you wish to reduce fluoride exposure now or prepare for this change, a reverse osmosis system is a reliable option.
Where Does Sun City Center Get Its Tap Water?
Sun City Center is served by Hillsborough County’s South-Central Water System, which sources water from:

The water treatment process includes:
- Coagulation, settling, and filtration
